Document settings
Settings that apply to the whole document: the baseline grid, color profiles, print options and the document language. Open them with the Document Setup button in the editor's top bar.
Opening the document settings
- Click the Document Setup button in the top bar.
- There are four tabs — Baseline Grid, Color Profiles, Print and Language.
- Change values and click OK. Changes show on screen right away. Cancel returns to the values the dialog opened with. Changes confirmed with OK can be undone in one step (
⌘/Ctrl+Z).
Page size and margins are not changed here but in the Page tab and the Attributes tab (see the "Pages" article). The dialog cannot be opened in observer mode.

Baseline grid
Grids for aligning lines of text to the same positions across the page: a horizontal grid for horizontal text and a vertical grid for vertical text.
- Horizontal grid
- Start — the distance from the top of the page to the first horizontal line
- Spacing — the distance between horizontal lines. Usually the same as the body text leading.
- Vertical grid
- Start — the distance from the left of the page to the first vertical line
- Spacing — the distance between vertical lines
- Common — shared by both grids.
- Color — the grid line color
- View threshold — below this zoom level (%) the grids are not drawn.
Start and increment are entered in pt.
To show a grid on screen, turn on Show horizontal baseline grid or Show vertical baseline grid in the View section of the Attributes tab with nothing selected. Each can be turned on and off separately. To snap lines of text to the grid, turn on Align to baseline grid in the paragraph attributes (horizontal grid; see the "Text" article). The grids are visible on screen only and do not print.
Turn on Snap to grid in the same View section and, when you drag an object, its edges (top, bottom and center; left, right and center) snap to the nearest grid line. It snaps only to the grids shown on screen, so turn on the horizontal grid to align to horizontal lines and the vertical grid for vertical lines. Grid snapping competes with the usual snapping to pages, margins and other objects, and the nearest one wins. Anchors and handles also snap to the grid when you drag path points.
The on/off state of the View section (grid display, Snap to grid, Show bleed, soft proofing) is remembered per document in this browser, so it stays the same when you reopen the document. It does not affect other devices or other people's screens.

Color profiles
- RGB working space — the reference profile for the screen and for RGB source material
- CMYK output — the profile used for RGB→CMYK conversion and for the PDF's OutputIntent. The list is managed under Color Profiles in the web portal, where you can upload an ICC file from your print shop.
If the chosen profile has no ICC file, you are told "This profile has no ICC file, so output uses an approximate conversion". Choose another profile or upload the file in the web portal.
New documents inherit the account's default profiles; a change made here applies to this document only.
The color mode (RGB/CMYK) is not on this tab but on the Print tab.

Settings that apply to PDF output.
- Color mode —
RGBorCMYK. Keep print documents in CMYK. In RGB mode, soft proofing, separation preview and spot color plates do not work. - Bleed — how far beyond the trim line to print, in the unit chosen in the Properties tab, up to 25.4 mm (72 pt). With a value set, Show bleed in the View section of the Attributes tab shows it on screen.
- Show crop marks under Crop marks — adds trim marks to the PDF.
- Overprint 100% black under Overprint black — prints black text over the inks beneath it, so a slight misregistration does not leave a white halo around the letters. It applies only to colors that use K alone; rich black made from all four inks still knocks out. It can be turned on only when the color mode is CMYK.
If your plan does not include print-ready PDF export, a notice appears at the top of this tab. You can still change the values.

Language
- Document language — choose Korean, English (US), English (UK), Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese or
[No Language]. It is the language followed by text whose character language is Auto (document language). The hyphenation dictionary, quotation mark shapes and regional glyph forms of Han characters depend on it. Set to[No Language]to disable hyphenation and quote conversion — useful for product codes and URLs. - Use typographer's quotes (" → “ ”) under Quotes — converts straight quotes to typographic curly quotes as you type.
The default language of new documents follows the Language setting in the web portal.
