PodoLay vs Adobe InDesign
Short answer: Adobe InDesign is the industry-standard desktop layout application with the deepest feature set — long-document tools, ebook export, scripting and a huge ecosystem. PodoLay is a print layout editor that runs in your browser: nothing to install, a typesetting engine modeled on InDesign's (paragraph composer, styles, threaded frames, master pages), and print-ready vector PDF with CMYK, bleed and PDF/X-4. If you need EPUB, footnotes, or to open .indd files, choose InDesign. If you want to lay out print documents from any computer without installing software, and share them as page-turning previews, PodoLay is worth a try — the Free plan needs no card.

Where InDesign is the better choice
- You work with existing InDesign files. PodoLay cannot open
.inddor IDML files. You can place pages of a PDF exported from InDesign, but they are not editable. - You publish ebooks or interactive documents. PodoLay makes print PDF only.
- You build long, structured books. Automatic tables of contents, footnotes, indexes and cross-references are InDesign features PodoLay does not have yet. (Dot-leader tabs make a hand-built contents page easy, but it is not generated.)
- You automate. Scripting, data merge and plug-ins have no PodoLay equivalent.
- Your print shop asks for PDF/X-1a. PodoLay writes PDF/X-4 and does not flatten transparency.
Where PodoLay is the better choice
- Nothing to install. Open a browser, sign in and work — on a lab computer, a borrowed laptop or a machine you cannot install software on. Documents and versions are kept on the server.
- What you see is what prints. Text lands in the PDF exactly where it was on screen, and the proof preview shows the separated plates and total ink before you send the file.
- Sharing for reading, not editing. Send someone a page-turning reader view of the layout, or publish it as a public link that anyone can open without an account. No app or PDF viewer needed on their side.
- Start on the Free plan. You can design and make proof prints without paying or entering a card; print-ready PDF export starts with the Starter plan. See pricing.
- Korean, Japanese and Chinese text is first class. Kinsoku rules, mojikumi sets and language-aware hyphenation are part of every account, not a separate edition.
Moving from InDesign
- Rebuild your master pages, paragraph styles and character styles in PodoLay once; the style library lets you register them to your account and load them into every new document.
- Export finished artwork or ads from InDesign as PDF and place them as pages or images in PodoLay.
- Upload the fonts you own (Starter and Pro) so your layouts keep their typefaces. PodoLay also ships 45 built-in font families.
FAQ
Is PodoLay a free alternative to InDesign?
PodoLay has a Free plan with every editing feature and no card required, but print-ready PDF export starts with the Starter plan (see pricing). The Free plan is enough to try the editor and make proof prints.
Can PodoLay open InDesign (.indd or IDML) files?
No. PodoLay cannot import .indd or IDML files. You can place pages from a PDF exported by InDesign, but they stay as placed artwork, not editable text.
Does PodoLay export print-ready PDF?
Yes. On the Starter and Pro plans PodoLay exports vector PDF in CMYK with ICC profiles, bleed, crop marks and PDF/X-4, with spot color plates, and runs a preflight check on every PDF.
Does PodoLay work offline?
No. PodoLay runs in the browser and saves to the server, so it needs an internet connection.
Can more than one person edit the same PodoLay document at once?
No. One person edits a document at a time. You can share read-only copies in observer or reader mode, or publish a reader-mode public link.
