Tables

Creating tables, editing rows and columns, and typing into cells.

Creating a table

  1. Choose the Table tool (no shortcut).
  2. Drag on the canvas. The size you drag sets the number of rows and columns (shown as columns × rows while you drag).
  3. Select the table and change the number of Rows and Columns and the Cell inset in the Table section of the Attributes tab.

Table editing mode and selecting cells

  1. Double-click a table with the Select tool to enter table editing mode.
  2. Click a cell to select it; drag to select a range of cells. The arrow keys or Tab/Shift+Tab move the selected cell.
  3. Click outside the table to leave editing mode. Esc first clears the selected cell (or line); press it again to leave editing mode.

With cells selected, Delete or Backspace clears their contents. When a single cell is selected, the Attributes tab shows that cell's attributes, and Fill Style sets the cell's background.

Typing into cells

  1. In table editing mode, double-click a cell. The cell enters text input. With a cell selected, pressing Enter or simply typing also starts input.
  2. Type. Cell text uses the same character and paragraph attributes in the Attributes tab as a text frame.
  3. Tab moves to the next cell, Shift+Tab to the previous one and Enter to the cell below, ready to type. Press Shift+Enter for a line break inside a cell. Esc ends input.

Copying and pasting cells

In table editing mode, select a cell or range and press ⌘/Ctrl+C, then select another cell and press ⌘/Ctrl+V. The right-click menu's Copy, Cut and Paste do the same.

  • Cells are filled from the selected cell rightwards and downwards. Anything that would fall outside the table is dropped (rows and columns are not added).
  • Copy one cell, select several and paste: every selected cell gets the same content.
  • Text formatting in the cells comes along. One undo restores the state before the paste.
  • Tables or tab-separated text copied from a spreadsheet or another app fill cells the same way. The other way round, cells copied here paste into other apps as tab- and newline-separated text (and as a table).

Inserting and deleting rows and columns

In table editing mode, select a cell and right-click.

  • Rows › Insert row above · Insert row below · Delete Row
  • Columns › Insert column left · Insert column right · Delete Column
  • Distribute Rows Evenly · Distribute Columns Evenly — evens out the row heights or column widths of the selection when it spans two or more rows (columns), otherwise of the whole table.

Merging and splitting cells

  1. In table editing mode, drag to select the cells to merge.
  2. Right-click › Merge Cells.
  3. To undo it, select the merged cell and choose Unmerge Cells; to split a cell, choose Split Cell Horizontally or Split Cell Vertically.

Table lines

Every inner border line in a table is a separately selectable Table line object. The outer border belongs to the table itself.

  • In table editing mode, click a border to select that line; the Table line's Stroke Style appears in the Attributes tab. Shift+click selects several lines.
  • To hide a single line, set its Stroke Style to None.
  • Drag a border to change the width of the column before it or the height of the row above it; the whole table grows or shrinks by the same amount. With one line selected you can also type an X (vertical line) or Y (horizontal line) value in Position & Size to move it precisely.
  • The fill and outer border of the whole table are set in the Fill Style and Stroke Style sections with the table selected.
