PodoLay
Print-ready layout in the browser

Typeset in the browser,
print exactly what you see

PodoLay is a web-based layout editor for books, magazines and flyers — nothing to install, and a print-ready vector PDF (CMYK, bleed, crop marks, PDF/X-4) that matches the screen glyph for glyph.

Start on the free plan with no card on file. Every editing feature is open.

From first page to the print shop, in one browser tab

We built the text engine, the canvas editor and the PDF generator ourselves — so the screen and the printed page never disagree.

Print PDF, exactly as on screen

Browser typesetting is transferred to the PDF at glyph-coordinate level. CMYK conversion, bleed, crop marks, PDF/X-4, selectable vector text — and a preflight check.

Professional typesetting engine

Text that flows through linked frames, multiple columns, text wrap, baseline grid, type on a path, tables. Place and refine at point precision.

CJK typesetting

Kinsoku rules, word-based line breaking, English hyphenation and per-character language are computed by the engine itself. Japanese and Chinese work the same way.

Master pages and styles

Master spreads, character and paragraph styles that inherit from a base style, with shortcuts. Page size, margins and columns change in one place: Document Setup.

Print color management

Proof colors show what the paper will look like; separations preview, ink manager, spot color books (ASE) and ICC profiles handle spot inks too.

Auto-save and asset management

Every edit is recorded on the server, so nothing is lost when the tab closes. Image and font libraries, document duplication, and a built-in help assistant.

Three steps to the print shop

Edits are recorded on the server as you go, and saving commits them to the document. Create, edit, and download the PDF.

  1. 1

    Create a document

Choose page size, margins and columns, and master pages are ready. Bleed is set in the editor's Document Setup; units (mm, pt, inch) and document language follow your document work settings.

  2. 2

    Edit

Place shapes, text, images and tables on the canvas and refine them with styles. Body text keeps flowing across pages.

  3. 3

    Export PDF

Make the PDF from the saved document, check plates and warnings in the preflight check, then download the PDF for your printer. It comes out exactly as you saw it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything?
No. It opens in a current Chromium-based browser. Documents are stored on the server, so you can continue on another computer.
What file do I hand to the printer?
A PDF/X-4 vector PDF. CMYK conversion, bleed and crop marks, and font subsetting are done on the server, and a preflight check shows plates and warnings. Available from the Starter plan; on the free plan you can make one with PDF passes.
How far does the free plan go?
5 documents (up to 16 pages), 200 MB of storage, 10 proof prints (browser printing) a month. Every editing feature is open. Going over a limit never deletes documents or files you already made.
Can I import InDesign documents?
Not yet. You start from a new document, but the familiar concepts — master pages, styles, linked frames, baseline grid — are all there.
Can I use my own fonts?
The 45 built-in fonts are available on the free plan; from Starter you can upload TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2 and TTC fonts. Please check the font license before uploading.
Can several people edit together?
Right now one person edits a document at a time. Sharing, comments and co-editing are in the works; the help assistant and 1:1 support are open today.
